Tsubokiri Seasonal Matcha by Marukyu Koyamaen

The name "Tsubokiri" means "breaking the seal," referring to a centuries-old tradition where spring-harvested tencha is sealed in ceramic jars and allowed to mature through the summer months. In late October, during the ro-biraki ceremony that opens the winter hearth, these jars are ceremonially opened for the first time. This patient aging process, once done in cool mountain storage, mellows the tea's character, deepening its umami and coaxing out a rounded sweetness impossible to achieve any other way.

The result is a matcha unlike any other time of year: rich and velvety smooth, with profound umami and a luxurious creamy sweetness that lingers. Soft, plush, and remarkably balanced, it's suitable for both thin (usucha) and thick (koicha) preparation. Available only October through November, or while supplies last.

Marukyu Koyamaen, founded in 1704 in Uji, Kyoto Prefecture, has earned over twenty-two first prizes in Japan's National Tea Competition. Their meticulous production methods and unwavering commitment to quality have made them one of Japan's most respected tea producers, trusted by tea ceremony schools and connoisseurs alike.

Please note: due to very high demand and very limited supply, we have to limit the purchase of this product to 2 per customer.
